    416-8B Labels - Fakes?

ALTEC LANSING MODEL 416-8B LF 15" WOOFERS - CLEAN PAIR | eBay

This guy has 4, I dont recall ever seeing that style of label on a 416-8B. There is also no serial number, all my -8Bs have stamped serials.

I can see a date code there of 8726 I think so thats 1987, which is when a few of mine are from.

    Are these fake labels?

    Nope - they're real.

Altec reissued the 416-8B for a while in the late 80's and early 90's in response to some prodding from a few of us.

Unfortunately, they didn't market them as aggressively as they should have, and they didn't sell well.

I think I was one of the few AL Contractors who bought and installed them in any real quantity....

I think they are the late ones as Todd says...I saw a pair and remember them but, dang that was 20 years ago...I barely remember this morning's coffee...

Agree, late models. Note the dual terminal openings in the spokes of the basket/frame.

They also have been re-coned (3-15-94) ,and only 7 years after manufacture. That in itself makes me wonder what kind of abuse they have been put through.Although they look pretty clean.I would be very interested to see the current T/S measurements on these motors !

If they are used professionally, a 7 year recone is pretty normal...We used to replace HF diaphragms once a year as a PM.

Cones get tired. Especially if used for live stuff.

Begs a question: what is the anticipated longevity of the 416 cone if used in a residence?

Good Question ! As OG noted,I think it really depends on the application they were used in.I've seen 604 and 515 cones (Paper Surrounds) 20159 cones 50+ years old that were still in great shape ! As the saying goes, "They Don't Make Them Like They Used Too".

...........it really depends on the application they were used in.
........ and the environment. I've seen Altecs that were residents in coastal Florida that had mold on the cones and cabinet and surface rust on all the screws and exposed ferrous parts. At the same time i've seen and own examples from the southwest that look like new 40 years later.
